Orig-\ninally planned with design frameworks in mind, the participatory design aspect\naimed to provide a high level of freedom for the young designers. In this regard, they\nwere able to influence the design process as well as the product, which led to new\ndesign challenges on the one hand, and interesting learning experiences on the oth-\ner. By analyzing reflections from the workshop facilitators, the applicability of the\nmentioned frameworks for educational escape game design is evaluated when ap-\nplied in a participatory design setting. This paper presents insights from the lessons\nlearned in this design process regarding empowerment and project environments.\nGenerally, a high level of freedom and democracy in participatory design results in\nless applicability of predetermined frameworks due to a considerable need for col-\nlective reflection on drug-preventive topics.
