Chatbots can increase \naccess to care and provide timely treatment, especially in Uganda, which has a predominantly \nyoung population, an under-resourced and underfunded mental healthcare system, and high \ntreatment gaps. This study aimed to explore how young Ugandans perceive using mental \nhealth chatbots to support their mental wellbeing, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of \nchatbots in this demographic. \n\nMethods: Using purposive and convenience sampling methods, the study recruited nine \nyoung adult Ugandans (mean age: 24.7) who were required to use a mental health chatbot \n(Wysa) for two weeks. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed \nthematically. The data was coded using both an inductive and deductive approach. \n\nResults: Twelve major themes emerged from participant interviews and were categorized \nusing the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Under Perceived Usefulness, participants \nidentified emotional support and expression, non-judgmental support, affordability and \naccessibility, practical and personalized solutions, limitations beyond early intervention, and \nnoted preference for human connection. Perceived Ease of Use included simple language, easy \ninterface and navigation, and challenges related to text-based interaction and Limited \ninteraction control. Subjective Norm included the influence of credible recommendations and \nuse driven by perceived benefits.\n\nConclusion: Young Ugandans perceive chatbots as beneficial interventions but also highlight \nseveral barriers and limitations of the technology. The study findings contribute to designing \nand implementing more effective and user-aligned chatbots that meet the unique needs of \nyoung Ugandans."}]}],"dce:subject":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Mental Health"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Chatbots"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Artificial Intelligence"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Young people"}]},{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Uganda"}]}],"dce:title":[{"@type":"bf:Title","bf:mainTitle":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Exploring Ugandan youth perspectives towards using mental health chatbots to support their mental health"}]}],"dcterms:created":["2025"],"dcterms:language":["eng"],"dcterms:type":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/69ZZ-2KGX"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Text"},{"@language":"deu","@value":"Text"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Testo"}]}],"ebucore:filename":["Lucy Namakula.pdf"],"ebucore:hasMimeType":["application\/pdf"],"edm:hasType":[{"@type":"skos:Concept","skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/pid.phaidra.org\/vocabulary\/P2YP-BMND"],"skos:prefLabel":[{"@language":"eng","@value":"Master theses"},{"@language":"deu","@value":"Masterarbeit"},{"@language":"ita","@value":"Tesi di master"}]}],"edm:rights":["http:\/\/rightsstatements.org\/vocab\/InC\/1.0\/"],"role:advisor":[{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:affiliation":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"University College Dublin"}],"skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/ror.org\/05m7pjf47"]}],"schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Pretorius"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Claudette"}],"skos:exactMatch":[{"@type":"ids:orcid","@value":"0000-0002-6351-9796"}]},{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:affiliation":[{"@type":"schema:Organization","schema:name":[{"@value":"Universidade Nova de Lisboa"}],"skos:exactMatch":["https:\/\/ror.org\/02xankh89"]}],"schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Delaunay"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Catarina"}],"skos:exactMatch":[{"@type":"ids:orcid","@value":"0000-0001-9679-0681"}]}],"role:aut":[{"@type":"schema:Person","schema:familyName":[{"@value":"Namakula"}],"schema:givenName":[{"@value":"Lucy"}]}]}
