         <abstract>
            <p>Zu einem Nachmittagskonzert am 19. Februar 1944 an der School of Design in Chicago führte Krenek in das Programm bestehend aus Klavierwerken des 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Er beschreibt das Programm im Überblick als repräsentativ für die gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen der Neuen Musik, insbesondere Neoklassizismus und Zwölftonmusik, auch in dem quantitativen Übergewicht der neoklassizistischen Werke im Programm. In kurzen Anmerkungen geht er danach auf die gespielten Werke von Strawinsky, Martinu und Milhaud bis zu den jungen Komponisten Ross Lee Finney und Carlos Chavez ein. Pianist war damals Felix Witzinger, nur Kreneks 3. Sonate für Klavier, op. 92 Nr. 4 spielte Krenek selbst.</p>
            <p>Ein Journalist der Chicago Sun beschrieb Kreneks einführende Worte als „most important feature“ des Konzerts, und betont damit die Bedeutung Kreneks in der Vermittlung Neuer Musik.</p>

               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_19" n="N009"/>toward what they call objectivity. For reasons which to explain
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_20" n="N010"/>would require a full-length lecture, expressionistic music has become
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_21" n="N011"/>known as intellectual and artificially computed. Suffice it here to

               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_29" n="N002"/>sonata is based only slightly on such technical procedures as have
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_30" n="N003"/>been used in the original Twelve-Tone Technique. The first movement
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_31" n="N004"/>is a Sonata allego with two themes, built up of four similar sections,
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_32" n="N005"/>all of which include developmental processes. This procedure can be
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_33" n="N006"/>found in several of <persName ref="gnd-118508288">Beethoven's</persName> late sonatas and quartets. The second
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_34" n="N007"/>movement consists of variations that alternate with brief canons,
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_35" n="N008"/>the latter easily identifiable by a characteristic trill motive that
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_36" n="N009"/>opens each cannon. The third movement, a very brief concentrated
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_37" n="N010"/>scherzo, with a more quiet middle section, and the concluding Adagio
               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_38" n="N011"/>are hardly in need of further comment.</p>

               <lb facs="#facs_2_tr_1_tl_39" n="N001"/>In conclusion I may say that the expressionistic style, as which we
